Founded in 1929 by George Macy, the Limited Editions Club published illustrated fine-press books for subscribers, in editions of 1500. Their publications tended to be classic titles, and featured the work of leadings illustrators and designers. After Macy's death in 1956, the firm remained family owned until 1970. Elmer Adler worked in his family's clothing firm in Rochester, N.Y. while developing an avocation as a book and print collector. In 1922 he came to New York City and established the Pynson Printers; he began to makea reputation as a book designer. Adler served as a typographic consultant to several magazines and to The New York Times. From 1930 to 1940 he published The colophon : a book collector's quarterly.
